Chapter Thirty-Nine

(6:21 pm)

Everything is a mess.

It’s all messed up.

It’s all wrong.

He hates it.

Of course he hates it.

He’s losing everything that makes him… him.

He washes his hands at the bathroom sink and dries them off with the cheap paper towels on top of the broken dispenser.

The dive bar is the only way to do this.

He walks out of the bathroom and back to his seat.

Andrea puts her phone down and smiles at him.

She’s got a great smile.

The biggest smile he’s ever seen.

He smiles back at her.

“Everything okay?” she asks.

“You tell me,” he says.

“What?”

“Checking your phone? Have somewhere else you’d rather be?”

“Excuse me?”

“Have someone else on the side?”

“The side? This is our first date. Who do you think you are?”

“A nice guy sitting across from a tramp,” he says.

Andrea stands up. “You know what? I’m out of here.”

She storms out of the dive bar.

He clenches his jaw.

Great. Now what? You complete fool. You idiot.

He takes a few deep breaths and rubs his face.

He feels someone touch his shoulder.

When he turns, a woman is standing there.

“Hey,” she says. “Uh, sorry, but… I saw what happened. I don’t blame you. For what you said. But since she’s gone… mind if I sit down and you buy me a drink?”

Just like that, another opportunity is before him.

But he’s not thinking straight.

Instead of telling her sit down and fixing the night, he curls his lip.

“Mind if I rip your throat out with my mouth?” he asks. “How about I tear your heart out with my bare hands and stuff it into your mouth?”

The woman hurries away.

Back to the bar.

He doesn’t need to look back to know she’s telling someone what he said.

And that someone is standing up to come start a fight.

So he does what he always does.

He just waits it out.

When the guy is close enough, he spins around and swings the beer bottle he had barely taken a drink from.

He smashes it against the guy’s head.

In the movies, the bottle explodes and the other person is barely dazed.

Real life is different.

The bottle doesn’t break.

But the guy is instantly hunched over, screaming in pain.

He throws two punches to end the fight and the runs for the door.

Outside, he gasps for fresh air.

The world is closing in on him.

That’s the real problem.

Everything’s changing.

Everything feels darker…

An idea comes to him.

He breaks out into a jog.

He can run for miles if need be.

Only he doesn’t need miles.

Andrea lives four blocks away.

She lives in her aunt’s house.

Her aunt passed away three months ago and she took the place because it was free. She’s deciding on what to do with it all now. That’s what she told him. See, he can listen… he loves to listen… he loves to see too.

He smiles as he jogs to Andrea’s house.

Now, the real gesture would be to knock on the door and beg for forgiveness. Tell her a story of how some woman broke his heart. How she cheated with guys using her phone.

It would be perfect.

Andrea would forgive him. Let him in.

He can see that happening… but it fades.
